Diversity & Inclusion
Science is strengthened by the diversity of our backgrounds and the variety of experiences we bring together to learn and solve problems.
As an instructor and mentor, I work to create inclusive, equitable learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, are confident exploring their potential, and are excited to learn about how people of all backgrounds have contributed to biology.
At St. Francis College, I am privileged to work with students and faculty from many backgrounds. I am excited to involve a diverse group of students in my research and teaching, and to engage with my community at SFC to further the understanding and appreciation for biology, ecology, and the amazing world around us. I am committed to working with everyone, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or country of origin.
I am committed to growing by listening and learning. As such, the list of actions below describes some of the steps I am taking to promote diversity, equity and inclusion. This list is subject to change, and I welcome suggestions on how we can work together to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive space for everyone at St. Francis College.
My actions to promote diversity, equity and inclusion include, but are not limited to:

My actions to promote diversity, equity and inclusion include, but are not limited to:
- Discussing diversity, equity, inclusivity, and mental health with students, including during lab meetings
- Highlighting research performed by scientists from diverse backgrounds in my teaching
- Recruiting broadly to increase participation by historically excluded student groups in scientific research
- Why should you consider participating in an undergraduate research experience in Ecology?
An article I highly recommend to interested undergraduate researchers:
McGill et al. 2021. You are welcome here: A practical guide to diversity, equity, and inclusion for undergraduates embarking on an ecological research experience. Academic Practice in Ecology and Evolution 11(8): 3636-3645. [Link - open access!]
- Why should you consider participating in an undergraduate research experience in Ecology?
- Recommending and nominating historically excluded and/or marginalized peers and students for awards
- Making science accessible to all by engaging in with the general public, including via high school science fairs, elementary education programs, and general outreach programs.
